The history of Armadale Academy

(concise version)

On Friday afternoon of the 28 March 1968 Armadale Academy was officially opened by Miss Margaret Herbison, MP for North Lanark.   The words that she spoke during her address and the aims of the Education Committee in West Lothian at that time have perhaps the same importance and relevance today.

Miss Herbison said Armadale Academy was the type of school that she would like to see throughout Scotland - comprehensive in nature - catering for children of all abilities.   She stressed that the importance of any educational system was the finding and developing of each youngster's individual talents.

During the opening she made three wishes :

That the teachers would find great happiness in the building;
That the parents would take a pride in the school;
That the pupils would find happiness in their chosen courses.

This was the time of a massive building programme, when a total of eight schools were built in West Lothian.
The Academy cost an estimated £535,000.
