AIMS
To give students an understanding
of how computers work and how
they are used in business and
industry;
to develop skills in using programs;
to solve problems and to expand the
students’ knowledge of the enjoyment
of using computers.

CONTENT
GENERAL PURPOSE PACKAGES
Learning about Database, Wordprocessing, Spreadsheets and Graphics.
COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL COMPUTING
Computers in Control, Robotics and Business applications eg Stock Control, Mail Order and Banking.
COMPUTER SYSTEMS
How a computer works.
PROGRAMMING
Giving the computer instructions in using LOGO or True Basic .
ASSESSMENT
Practical Ability will be internally assessed and will take place as the topics above are completed.
Knowledge & Understanding is remembering what computers can do and how to operate them. This is assessed in the final examinations.
Problem Solving is applying the knowledge of computers to find solutions to problems.
The overall grade is determined by an average of the grades obtained in Knowledge & Understanding, Problem Solving and Practical Ability.

AIMS
Administration aims to develop the skills and
knowledge associated with the processing and
communication of business information. The
course leads on to further study in S5/6 and can
also enhance students’ ability to use ICT in all
aspects of school life.
CONTENT
The course is split into 2 areas of study,
Administrative Support and
Information and Communication Technology.
ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT
This area covers- the structure and function of business organisation;
- the working environment - office layout, working practises;
health & safety issues, dealing with callers, mail processing;
- storage and retrieval of information - manual and electronic methods;
- reprographics;
- sources of information - paper based and electronic;
- preparing and presenting information;
- dealing with travel arrangements.
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (I C T)
This area of the course introduces students to the uses of ICT to process business information.
Software applications used include - databases;
spreadsheets;
Power point presentation;
word processing;
the internet;
e-mail;
graphics.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment is divided into 3 elements -
Knowledge & Understanding )A written paper to assess skills in using course knowledge
Problem solving )to solve business problems
Practical AbilitiesStudents will be required to undertake a series of
computer based tasks which will assess their ability to use ICT to process information

AIMS
Business plays a key role in economic development. This course aims to provide access
to the dynamic and complex business and information environment in which we live and work.
The standard grade course can lead on to further study in S5/6, further and higher education.
For those thinking of a career in business, this course provides an excellent grounding.
CONTENT
Students learn about the structure and organisation of business and enterprise through a series of practical activities, case studies and business simulations. Business decision making areas covered include : Marketing; Human Resource Management; Finance; Production & Distribution.
Information technology is used throughout the course as a means of processing information and as an aid to decision making in each of the above areas and is an integral part of the learning process. By the end of the course, students will have had experience of databases, spreadsheets, graphics, word processing, presentation and internet software.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment is divided into 2 parts.
External Assessment : Students sit a written paper in Knowledge and Understanding and Decision Making. Students apply decision making skills to suggest solutions to business problems based on realistic data and information provided.
Internal Assessment : Students carry out a series of tasks involving a CD ROM business simulation in which they will access and process information, reach conclusions, make recommendations, and communicate their findings.

Suitable for complete beginners with no previous experience in Business Education.

COURSE CONTENT:
The course comprises three units:
UNIT 1 Administrative Services
UNIT 2 Information Technology for Administrators
UNIT 3 Presenting and Communicating Information
METHODOLOGY:
The aims of the course are to develop:
skills in Information Technology through using business hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets, databases and the Internet;
understanding and development of skills required for an administrative assistant;
communication skills - printed, verbal and electronic;
awareness of changes in working practice;
awareness of factors affecting employees - health & safety, legislation;
knowledge of information processing procedures.
ASSESSMENT:
Units internally assessed - maximum of two attempts
Course externally assessed - by 1 hour 45 minutes examination
NB Units must be successfully completed before course assessment.

COURSE CONTENT:
The course comprises three units:
UNIT 1-Administrative Services
UNIT 2-Information Technology for Administrators

METHODOLOGY:
The aims of the course are to develop:
more advanced skills in Information Technology through using business hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets, databases and the Internet;
communication skills - printed, verbal and electronic, and the importance of good customer service;
an understanding of changes to working practices;
factors affecting workers in an office environment eg security, health & safety, legislation;
awareness of role of functional departments;
uses of business documents to collect, process and transmit information;
knowledge of procedures for organising business travel.
ASSESSMENT:
Units internally assessed - maximum of two attempts
Course externally assessed - by two papers : Theory Paper - 1 Hour
Practical Paper - 1 Hr 20 Minutes.
NB Units must be successfully completed before course assessment.

Standard Grade Business Management Grades 3.or 4 would be helpful but not essential
OR
Standard Grade English, grade 3.
COURSE CONTENT:
The course comprises two units:
UNIT 1 Business Enterprise( 1 Credit)
UNIT 2 Business Decision Areas(2 Credits)
METHODOLOGY:
The aims of the course are to:
develop and understanding of the importance of business and enterprise in society;
develop the ability to analyse the ways in which different organisations achieve their objectives;
develop an understanding of the internal structure of organisations;
enable students to recognise the importance of marketing, finance operations and human resource management as undertaken by businesses;
develop problem solving, decision making and analytical skills;
assess the contribution of IT to the effectiveness of business;
provide a foundation for future education and training.
ASSESSMENT
Units internally assessed - at end of each unit.
Course externally assessed - 1 hour 45 minutes.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Standard Grade Computing Studies at grade 3 OR 4
COURSE CONTENT:
Computer Application Software
This unit is designed to develop the student's knowledge of the types and sources of application software. The unit will also involve looking at the features of several software packages and using them to produce information.
Database Systems
This unit will introduce the students to databases and how they can be used to model systems and allow them to be searched and organised in various ways. A practical database system will be produced.
Multimedia
The unit is used to show the student the hardware and software used in multimedia systems. These are the parts used to form the components for a multimedia application.
METHODOLOGY:
Class teaching, individual learning and individual practical work and assessment.
ASSESSMENT:
There are several short tests and a single practical exercise for each unit. There will also be one major practical exercise which counts for 30% of the overall grade.

Candidates with a strong computing background (Int 2 / Higher Info systems) may be considered at the discretion of the principal teacher.
COURSE CONTENT:
The course comprises two units:
UNIT 1 Administrative Services (1 Credit)
UNIT 2 Information Technology for Management (2 Credits)
METHODOLOGY:
The aims of the course are to develop:
advanced skills in Information Technology through using business hardware and software in problem solving situations - word processing, databases, spreadsheets, presentation software, communication software;
communication skills in a logical and effective manner - printed, verbal and electronic;
organisation and time-management skills, team working;
knowledge and understanding of legislation affecting workers in an office environment, knowledge of working practice;
plan and organise formal meetings;
understand the importance of providing effective customer service.
ASSESSMENT:
Units internally assessed - maximum of two attempts
Course externally assessed - by 2 papers - Theory : 1 hr 20 mins
Practical - 1 hr 20 mins
NB Units must be successfully completed before course assessment.

COURSE CONTENT:
Information Organisation
This unit deals with what data and information are, sources of information and the social, ethical and legal aspects of using information.
Database Systems
How to analyse a problem to produce a data model of a non computerised system. Design and implement a database given a problem.
Hypermedia
History of Hypermedia, including the internet and other multimedia. Organisation of hypermedia systems.
METHODOLOGY:
Class teaching, individual learning and individual practical work and assessment.
