AIMS
Students will be encouraged to develop
existing skills and learn new ones.
They will focus on basic drawing skills
and techniques before exploring a wide
range of other materials from paint and
clay to the latest computer technology.
CONTENT
The course is made up of THREE distinct elements :
EXPRESSIVE ACTIVITY
Students will complete TWO Expressive Activities during S3/4. In these they will investigate topics and themes by drawing, photography and collecting visual reference materials. They are then given the opportunity to explore personal ideas, thoughts and feelings and develop these into finished artwork in at least TWO of the following areas : PAINTING; DRAWING; PRINTMAKING; SCULPTURE.
DESIGN ACTIVITY
Students will complete TWO Design Activities during S3/4. The activities will be based on real-life design problems. Students will investigate a problem, produce ideas for consideration, then develop the best of these into a finished design. They will work on at least two of the following areas : GRAPHICS; CERAMICS; PRODUCT DESIGN; FASHION; INTERIOR DESIGN; ILLUSTRATION.
CRITICAL ACTIVITY
During S3/4 students will be given opportunities to research, discuss and appreciate the work of artists, designers and architects in our society. As well as developing the skills and knowledge necessary to express and communicate personal opinions and judgements about design and expressive art students will also learn to critically evaluate their own creative work.
ASSESSMENT
Students are assessed on the three following activities. Each activity is worth a third of the final marks.
EXPRESSIVE ACTIVITY
This part of the course will be assessed by a five hour practical examination at the end of S4. In the exam students will be expected to produce finished artwork based on classwork done during several weeks’ preparation time.
DESIGN ACTIVITY
Students will respond to a Design Brief given to them at the start of S4. During class time they will produce a design portfolio which must show all four stages of the Design Process. This will be assessed by their teachers and moderated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).
CRITICAL ACTIVITY
During S4 students will write TWO Critical Appreciations, ONE about the work of architects or designers and ONE about the work of artists. These will be sent to the SQA for marking.
