Standard Grade

Levels: Foundation, general and credit

(return to the top of this page)

AIMS
To give students an understanding of different materials and the design
process and to develop the students’ practical skills.

CONTENT
The course is built around three areas -

Knowledge & Understanding
Practical Skills
Designing

The students will  :

learn about tools , materials and correct processes;
gain practical experience in the workshop;
learn about and use the design process;
learn communicative skills by drawing and sketching.

In S3  each student is expected to design and make a number of products which have been carefully selected to develop skills in designing and making 3 dimensional products.

In S4, students must complete a design folio of a product of their own choosing which will be submitted for assessment with their completed model.

It has always been the practice to ask parents to contribute towards the cost of materials.  There is a single charge to cover all costs in S3  but rising costs make it necessary to ask students to pay for the materials used in their final project.

ASSESSMENT
Knowledge & Understanding written examination at end of S4.
Practical Skills assessed on final project.
