Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies

Welcome to RMPS department.

Why does RMPS matter?

There are many different religions. As we go through life we will see, meet and work with people with different religions. Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies is important because it teaches us about these different religions including their festivals, ceremonies, customs and symbols. RMPS also helps us to understand the effect that religion has on peoples’ lives

The aims of RMPS

Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies should help pupils to:

  • Acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of the major world religions;
  • Learn to understand and respect different religions, beliefs, values and traditions and understanding their influence on individuals, societies, communities and cultures;
  • Explore issues within, across and between faiths and consider questions of meaning and purpose in life;
  • Enhance their spiritual, moral, cultural and social development by
    • developing awareness of the fundamental questions in life raised by human experiences and how religious teachings can relate to them;
    • responding to such questions with reference to the teachings and
      practices of religion;
    • reflecting on their own beliefs, values and experiences in the light of their study
  • Develop a positive attitude towards other people, respecting their right to hold different beliefs from their own;
  • Develop their sense of identity and belonging, preparing them for adult life as citizens in a plural society;
  • Develop skills of inquiry and response in analysis, expression, reflection, evaluation and application, through the use of distinctive languages, listening and empathy.
