Physics

S1&2

Pupils in S1 and S2 follow a wide science course, which involves elements of Physics throughout. The teaching of these classes is shared with the Chemistry and Biology departments

Standard Grade

Pupils who choose to study the Physics Standard Grade will be involved in a variety of activities, which show them how Physics applies to real life. This leads to learning some of the important principles of Physics. They will develop practical abilities, working on their own and with others. This involves the planning and carrying out of investigations, which lead to the solution of practical problems.

The course consists of the following units:

  • Using Electricity
  • Telecommunications
  • Transport
  • Energy Matters
  • Health Physics
  • Electronics
  • Space Physics

A pass at General level can lead to an Intermediate 2, while Credit passes will allow progression to Higher.

Higher

This course can be chosen in S5 and S6, and is designed to increase pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the concepts of Physics, and its many applications in modern society. It provides the opportunity to develop skills necessary to find solutions to scientific problems, such as experimenting, investigating and analysing, and gives a deeper insight into the structure of the subject. The course makes a valuable contribution to pupils’ general education, and provides a sound basis for further study at a more advanced level.

The course contains the following units:

  • Mechanics and Properties of Matter
  • Electricity and Electronics
  • Radiation and Matter

Entry to the course requires Standard Grade Physics at Credit level, or a pass at Intermediate 2, as well as Credit or Intermediate 2 Maths.

Advanced Higher

When possible, the department offers pupils who have studied the Higher course the option to progress to Advanced Higher level.
