Standard Grade
The Course
Our current S4 pupils are working on a Standard Grade Course which caters for all abilities. This national course places equal emphasis on the skills of Reading, Writing and Talking. The course is structured around units of work which cover these three elements. The study of literature remains of prime importance.
Pupils achieve at one of three levels: Credit (Grades 1 and 2); General (Grades 3 and 4); Foundation (Grades 5 and 6).
Assessment
All pupils must complete a folio of their best work over two years, in Reading and Writing. In addition, they will sit external examinations in Writing and Close Reading (interpretations at two levels of difficulty) at the end of Fourth Year. Talking, which is made up of Solo Talk and Group Discussion, is assessed within the school with no external examination. Folio work and examination work have equal weighting and equally determine a pupil’s final grade.
From June 2004, our S4 classes will sit the SQA Higher Still examinations.
