Linlithgow Academy

Liaison

The Academy is part of a much wider community and must fulfil its role within that community. We endeavour to forge sound links with the Primary Schools from whom we receive our pupils and with Further, Higher education and the world of work whence we direct our pupils. Throughout their time here pupils will be encouraged to appreciate their own place within the community and it is hoped to extend practical commitment in this area.

Primary Liaison

There is an established relationship between the Academy and the associated Primaries. Senior staff meet regularly, in-service time is shared, there is a developing liaison between subject specialists and Primary Staff, P7 pupils come to the Academy in June for an introductory visit and there is a sound consultative process between Primary teachers and Academy Guidance staff aimed at easing the pupils transition from one school to another. Current efforts are focused on developing the national 5-14 programme.

The Academy within West Lothian

There is a co-operation between Linlithgow Academy and the ten other West Lothian High schools. There is joint development within the curriculum area, within Staff in-service training and over resourcing. In the upper school, S5/6, some pupils do travel between schools in order to benefit from the broadest possible choice of subjects.

The Academy also enjoys a close relationship with both West Lothian and Oatridge Colleges.

Higher and Further Education

In fifth or sixth year a high percentage of the pupils consider Further and Higher Education. Advice from Guidance and Career staff, College and University handbooks and the opportunity to attend institutional Open Days are all available to assist pupils in making their respective decisions.

It is important to realise that applications for colleges and universities must be made as early as possible during a student final year and certainly well before Christmas.

Parents' Meetings

On at least one occasion during the year parents are invited into School for consultation with their children s teachers. A specific calendar is issued annually and a letter offering appointment times is sent home prior to the meeting.

Parents can make specific appointments at other times during the year if there is any concern or enquiry over the progress or welfare of a pupil. It is usually more appropriate to see Senior Staff or Guidance Staff and it is requested that an appointment is made by contacting the School Office.

Education in Industry Links

The Academy is committed to furthering our links with industry. We currently benefit from our own initiatives which have obtained sponsorship for specialised equipment, staff training opportunities, secondments for Staff, some work experience placements for pupils and visitors from industry coming into the School.

All our S4 pupils gain a work experience placement and we intend to build on these examples to improve pupil awareness of the industrial and commercial world.

Linlithgow Academy Association

The Association is representative of all people who wish to be associated with the Academy: there is no subscription fee but the hard-working committee promote an annual programme of events which is both social and educational. They aim to further improve communications between School and community and to raise generous funds to assist the School.

They seek the support of all parents - they deserve every encouragement from parents, staff and friends alike.

Letting

The letting of the Academy facilities in the evening and at weekends is one School Board duty. Community Education with an extensive evening class programme make good use of the School, along with local groups and individuals.

Relevant information, fees, application procedures etc., are currently available from the school.

The Theatre facility in school is one particularly attractive facility, with the versatility for many uses.
