The Mechanics Workshop

In modern times the lower buildings near the river’s edge were the dyeworks, but they were originally an iron and brass foundry.
The Mechanic’s Workshop, the long 3 storey building was vital for the mills. Any factory in the 18th. century had to retain its independence and be able to repair, develop and manufacture much of its machinery itself. Therefore, part of the village workforce was made up of skilled tradesmen such as millwrights, foundrymen, and turners - the mechanics upon which the mills depended for their continued operation.
