1. When did Owen build his village school?

2. What age range was taught in the school?

3. Make a complete list of the school's curriculum (i.e. the subjects taught).

4. Using the figures mentioned, work out the pupil/teacher ratio in both the elementary and the infant schools.

5. What form of discipline was not permitted in the school? Why do you think that Owen did not allow it's use?

6.Describe the school uniform for both boys and girls. Try to find a picture of one of the uniforms and draw it in your workbook.

7. Why do so many people visit the school today?

8. After the pupils were too old to attend the school, what facilities were available for them in the village to continue their education?

9. Look at the recreation of the school classroom pictured above. Describe the classroom in detail. How does this classroom compare with the one you are used to at your school?

10. Write an essay in which you describe a typical day at school at New Lanark in 1810. Your teacher may help you by playing a cassette tape of the experiences of Annie McLeod, an 11 year old girl who lived in New Lanark at that time.
