New Buildings

New Buildings was built in 1798 by David Dale as a centre-piece in a plain classical style. Its main function was to act as a home for the factory workers, though a room on an upper floor was also used for religious purposes.
The famous Bell Tower contains a bell used by Dale to herald the start of the day’s work in the mills. The popular story about the bell is that it was brought by the Highlanders from their storm-bound ship when Dale persuaded them to come and work for him at New Lanark.
