It is the School policy to actively encourage the adoption of a School Dress Code. This was successfully launched in 1994 after extensive consultation, and continued cooperation from pupils now enrolling in the Academy is anticipated.
Boys and Girls:
- a colour code of black and white
- black shoes or black trainers
Boys:
- black trousers but not denim
- a collared shirt - white
- a polo shirt - black or white
- a polo neck - black or white
Girls:
- black skirt, culottes or trousers, but not denim
- a white blouse
- a polo shirt - black or white
- a polo neck - black or white
Options which may then be worn are a school tie, a plain black or school pullover, a black cardigan, or a plain black or school sweatshirt. Blazers may find favour in the junior or senior school. The school tie is only available from the Academy. The school will continue to sell pullovers, cardigans, sweatshirts and polo shirts with the school badge on. Recognising the request for more widely accessible school wear other items should be obtainable at a range of prices from several retailers. There is an attempt to discourage"slagging" amongst pupils focused on "designer-wear", a complaint identified in a recent bullying questionnaire.
Items available from school with the school badge/name are as follows:
- Round neck sweatshirt - sm, med or large £11
- "T" shirts - black £5
- Tie £6
- Scarf £4
All clothes should be marked with the pupil's name. Extremes of fashion are positively discouraged and clothing which may either constitute a safety risk or encourage rivalries will not be allowed; for example: excessive jewellery or football colours. Track suits are only appropriate for Physical Education and should not be worn at other times in school. 'Shell suits' are definitely banned, on the grounds of safety as well as being decidedly more appropriate for leisure and recreation.
For Physical Education it is essential that pupils have a complete change of clothes. Advice will be given and must be followed as to the appropriate kit for a particular activity. Pupils may be outdoors, and retaining the same clothes for physical activity will be\ personally uncomfortable, if not un-hygienic. A towel should also be brought to P.E. Pupils medically unfit for P.E. should bring a note of explanation from home.
The Authority operates a scheme of provision to ensure that a pupil is sufficiently and suitably clad to take full advantage of the education provided. Families in receipt of Income Support or Family Credit will automatically qualify for such a scheme. Other cases will be determined according to the personal circumstances of the family.Parents who wish to apply for the scheme should complete an application form which is available from the Academy or the Education Service, Lindsay House, South Bridge Street, Bathgate, EH48 ITS
