The Friday afternoon closure for pupils permits time for staff training. This has only been achieved by re-distributing the traditional school hours and makes no reduction in the week's teaching time. The School Office is open on a more regular basis from 8.30 a.m. - daily Monday - Friday, and someone is usually available during school holidays, but not on Public Holidays.
Attendance
This is checked at 8.45 a.m. by the Register teacher. Pupils who arrive after the end of registration must report to the Office. A daily attendance sheet is circulated to all staff, allowing them to check period attendance.
Any absence from school must be explained by a note to the Register teacher on the pupil's return to school. Any 'unexplained absence' is referred to Guidance staff who can then request an enquiry to be made by the Educational Welfare Officer. Consistent problems of unexplained absence or of truancy can be passed to the Attendance Advisory Panel. In addition to regular attendance at school, punctuality is similarly seen as important. Frequent lateness is addressed initially by detention, but consistent difficulties are referred to the Educational Welfare Officer.
The school year amounts to 190 days of pupil attendance. It is preferred that, in the interest of pupils, family holidays should betaken during school holidays. It is recognised that this is not always possible but the Rector cannot sanction any more than two weeks absence in this respect during the year.
Pupils are instructed not to leave the school, other than during the lunch break, without obtaining permission from a senior member of staff.
In Sixth Year some flexibility is introduced into student attendance, although attendance at Registration, all timetabled classes, specific meetings or assemblies is mandatory.
Transport
Pupils who live within the catchment area of Linlithgow Academy but are more than two miles from the Academy are entitled to a free season ticket, or an identification permit or to special transport. Application forms are issued from Primary schools for pupils transferring from P7 to S1. Other pupils should enquire at the School Office. Buses come into, and leave from, our bus-park and pupils are instructed to move carefully within this area. Responsible behaviour is obviously expected on all buses.
Meals
At Lunch-time Hot meals, snacks, sandwiches and drinks are available in the Academy dining hall at lunch-time. A set meal costs £1.10, but self-service selection permits individual variations of choice. A vegetarian selection is available. Any pupil whose parent is in receipt of Income Support from the Department of Social Security is entitled to free meals - further information and an application form can be obtained from the School Office or from the Education Service, Lindsay House, South Bridge Street, Bathgate, EH48 ITS. Packed lunches may also be eaten in the Social Area.
Emergencies
In the event of unplanned school closures when pupils might be sent home, any pupil who needs supervision or care until the end of normal school hours may always remain safely in school. Any public announcement advising parents of emergency arrangements in school are made using Radio Forth.
