Birkhill Fireclay Mine aims to develop children's understanding of the Earth's Crust, the materials it supplies and how these materials can be used. A guided tour illustrates the geology of carboniferous sediments. Fossil trees over 300 million years old are clearly visible in the clay. The importance of fireclay to many processes used from the Industrial Revolution until the present day is also featured. The effects of glaciation, water and other land forming forces may be seen in the Avon Gorge.
